Lent Begins on Valentine’s Day

Lent is a holy season in the church year that calls us to examine our lives and enter into a time of spiritual renewal. This year, Lent’s official beginning (Ash Wednesday) is also Valentine’s Day. Usually, we begin our Lenten observance with a special worship service on Ash Wednesday. However, because of Valentine’s Day celebrations, we will not conduct an Ash Wednesday worship service this year.

Instead, we will observe the traditions of Ash Wednesday during our worship service on Sunday, February 18 (the first Sunday of Lent). If you’ve never been to an Ash Wednesday service, you can get a sampling of what the service is all about and may even find that you’d like that to be a spiritual way to kick off Lent next year. Don’t worry, if you don’t want ashes on you, you’ll be under no pressure at all to be marked by them.
