Independence Day

As we celebrate our national independence this week, it may also be a good time to reflect on our spiritual independence. Can you declare your independence from the things that hold you back in life? Can you make a declaration of independence from attitudes and behaviors that keep you from all the possibility God has placed inside of you?

Maybe it is a good day to declare your Independence from anything that keeps you from building up God’s kingdom of love and justice. Maybe this is a good day to sign on the line to say, “No more! No longer will I sit by passively and not do anything about the injustices I see in this world.”

You know in our nation, July 4 was just the beginning. It was the signing, but the struggle, the battle to achieve that independence was looming on the horizon. I am not saying that it is as easy as saying, “I’m not going to do that anymore.” There are battles yet to be fought. Hard ones. Sometimes you will win, sometimes you will lose. But know this, you fight them with a great crowd of people around you who are fighting them too. You are fighting them with the aid of a good and gentle God. In Christ you have been set free for freedom, do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.

Have a safe and meaningful holiday!
